If you’re wondering where you can work remotely and put your IT skills to use, check out these companies where working from home is encouraged.
What most influences your decision to work for a particular company? Is it the amount of money it offers or the level of autonomy? Is family-like atmosphere important to you? Perhaps continuous career advancement and opportunities for personal growth are your deciding factors. How essential to you is it that a firm be independently owned and not accountable to investors? And what about other considerations such as working remotely, from anywhere you want?
Most successful companies know there’s a strong connection between well-cared-for employees and happy customers. After all, content employees will enjoy delighting their customers. Flexible work options are another element of progressive companies. Employers there focus on the quality of their employees’ work and worry less about where the work is being performed.
With these thoughts, I pulled a few names from the top of my IT/Computer company list and sent them each this simple question: “What makes you so great?” I knew they allowed telecommuting (that’s how they made it to my list in the first place); but I wanted to know what else made them good companies to work for.
So, in their own words here’s why you might want to work for one of them.
Lori McLeese, Automattic’s HR Lead
“We hire people who are passionate about their roles – developing elegant code, engineering happiness for our users, designing beautiful applications, or supporting operations in a company that’s being run like no other one we’ve worked at. We set up people to be successful.
“When an employee first joins, we help them create an ergonomically correct home office – desk, chair, computer, monitor – and train them to engineer happiness (provide customer support) for their first three weeks on the job. That’s an experience everyone at the company, regardless of position, does, and it gives each person working here a better understanding of both our product and our customers.
“We value personal interactions as much as professional ones; we converse on internal blogs about games, fitness, books, music, animals, travel, etc. We attend an all company meetup once a year (past locations have included Park City, UT; San Francisco, CA; Budapest, Hungary; Mont-Sainte-Anne, Quebec, among others), and team meetups several times a year where we brainstorm, launch projects, and bond over activities such as go-karting, cooking classes, late night board games, and surfing.
“We encourage Automatticians to develop their skills – every employee has access to a Code School account and we encourage folks to speak at WordCamps and industry events. We realize that as individuals, we have preferred ways/hours of working and encourage each Automattician to find that flexible schedule that works best for them. We have an open vacation policy and ask employees to take the time off that they need. We have a similar maternity/paternity policy – are you or your spouse or significant other expecting a new addition to your family, either through birth or adoption? Great! Take the time off that you need to bond with your new family member. We place a high degree of trust and autonomy – we hire hard working, smart people, and expect them to do a great job.”

“One of the best aspects of working for A2 Hosting is that it’s independently owned. We don’t have to focus on making stockholders happy. Instead, we can focus our efforts on creating products and services that best fit the needs of our customers. We’re able to spend time developing high speed hosting products that fit our core values.
“Also, one of the factors in our discussions on how to generate additional revenue is the importance of taking care of A2 Hosting employees and being able to give appropriate raises and bonuses when they are earned.”

Samuel Allen, Marketing Specialist
“At Accella, telecommuting allows our development team to split their time equally between work responsibilities and their personal lives. Additionally, by not having to drive back and forth to the office every day, we feel that our team members can work more efficiently and creatively on the diverse array of projects that we handle. This means that everyone involved in the development process – coders and clients alike – come away feeling proud of the final product.”
